Magnolia Electric Co.

I got to see Magnolia Electric Co. play on Wednesday. Wow.

When I first walked in, I thought I was in the wrong bar. There was absolutely no sign of an impending show, but I trusted that the fact that someone took my ticket meant I was in the right place. I was even 45 minutes late. The show didn't start for another 45 minutes. One of the ten people who were in the bar when I got there was Rick Mcrank, so not only is he an amazingly stylish skateboarder, he also knows where to go to see some serious guitar shredding.

I noticed that in the far back corner one of the bartenders was watching the A's game. I made it just in time to see Frank Thomas pop up to centre and that made them two down in the series (now they are three down, not looking good). Why am I posting sports news? The Athletics are my favourite sports team and they are in the second round. I am allowed to get excited.

Well back to the show. Opening band = forgettable. Middle band was super fun, lots of flannel and they weren't scared to throw some good long instrumental breaks in to the mix. I do however forget their name, so I guess they were also forgettable.

Photos of the un-named second act.

Then came Magnolia Electric Co. they did not disappoint. I don't know if I have told all of you about the first time I heard their album "Trials and Errors" but I do know that I have told a lot of you. I have also tried to shove it down a lot of throats. It is in my top 10 albums of all time (and it is a live one), and it stands as my favourite first listen (if that can be a category). There was one other thing that brought my expectations up into the stratosphere, Blade's reaction to their live show. I remember him telling me he was going to see them (this was a few years ago), but I had never heard of them so I declined tagging along. Well I ran into him on Corydon the night of the show and he was more hyper than I think I have ever seen him. He was jumping off bus benches and talking a mile a minute about how great the show was (unheard of for my usually mild mannered friend). So that made me want to check this band out. So enough with the blabbing here are the photos.

They also had an amazing drum skin. Or whatever you call the front picture area.

So I am sorry that was so wordy, but I really enjoyed the show, so I am really not sorry.

They are in Winnipeg on Monday the 16th, so see them.

Love
Nathan

Good to hear your still going to those shows. I like the last photo on this here blog... it looks lonely, content, relaxed, and "eager" all at the same time to me.
